PRIORITIES

As Mayor, Tony Benavides' priorities have
focused on the City's economic development,
the revitalization and restoration of traditional neighborhood marketplaces, heightening neighborhood security, improving the quality
of life throughout Lansing communities, and streamling and improving municipal operations and services.

Since his inauguration on Jan. 27, 2003 Mayor Tony Benavides has higlighted a number of measures and initiatives that have become the hallmark of his Administration's Four-Point Action Plan for the City of Lansing. His priorities include the Continuation of the City's Economic Development Programs, the Strengthening and Revitalization of Lansing Neighborhoods, Better Municipal Operations and Services, and the Improvement of the Overall Quality of Life for the Citizens of Lansing.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SUCCESSES

• Maintaining the "Lansing Works! Keep GM!" effort;

• Held "Car Capital of the World" Campaign to emphasize GM's community value;

• Helped bring Housing Development to the former Boys' Training School site;

• Readdressed Downtown Revitalization Efforts;

• Received $400,000 EPA Grant for brownfield assessments & restoration;

• Revitalization and Development of Lansing's major traffic corridors;

• Brought Interest and Activity to Downtown with "Sculpture in the Streets";

• Ushered in era of Environmental Restoration with construction of new businesses like Neogen and Prudden Place on former brownfield sites;

• Continues Downtown Development with Boji Project — bringing more parking and offices to Capital City — and with South Washington Square improvements;

• Convenes Blue Ribbon Committee on Downtown Development and forms Beautification Task Force to improve and enhance Lansing's appearance;

MUNICIPAL OPERATIONS & SERVICES

• Submitted balanced budget without layoffs, service cuts, or tax hikes;

• Strengthened "Sister Cities" Involvement and Participation;

• Declined past pay raise and leading way to cut and curtail City spending;

• Streamlined City Departments and Mayoral Staffs;

• Supporting Low-Income Citizens through Income Tax Assistance, Sewer Utility Credits, and Career Preparation and Education Programs;

STRENGTHENING NEIGHBORHOODS

• Multiple Street Improvements and Infrastructure Repairs;

• Reviewing Landlord-Tenant Relationships and Responsibilities;

• Working with Homeowners, Landlords, and Lansing Neighborhood Council to solidify strategies for neighborhood development;

• Continue Neighborhood Grant Programs;

• Developed "Mayor's Community Government Response Team" with "374-TONY" Hotline;

QUALITY OF LIFE ISSUES

• Continuous Support of Education, Diversity, and Literacy Campaigns;

• Promote Cooperation and Understanding between Activists and Demonstrators, and law enforcement and security representatives;

• Continue Success of Lansing's annual "Common Ground" Festivities;

• Support Children through Mayor's "Drug Free Youth Task Force" and "Youth Advisory Committee";

• Construct and Improve City Athletic and Recreation facilities and Programs;

• Provide student opportunities through "Lansing Summer Works Program";

• Seek input and ideas for State's "Cool Cities" Initiatives.
