The City of Lansing established a coordinating committee, comprised of civic, community, and religious leaders from throughout the Lansing area, to oversee and implement plans to receive and care for Hurricane Katrina evacuees. The committee was convened by Mayor Tony Benavides, at the request of Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, and was the preliminary step in preparation for the anticipated influx of displaced citizens from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. One of the committee's basic functions is to determine Lansing ’s capacity to receive and support individual and family evacuees.
