MARCH 21, 2005
GROUNDBREAKING

March 21, 2005 marked the beginning of another landmark construction project undertaken during Mayor Tony Benavides' current term. With a ceremonial "turn of the dirt," construction of Prudden Place -- a 120, three-story luxury apartment complex -- officially began.

CONTINUED GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT

Lansing Mayor Tony Benavides (above) prepares to shovel the first spadeful of dirt signifying the official groundbreaking for Prudden Place, a three-story apartment complex that will provide 120 one- and two-bedroom units in Lansing's North side. This is just one of many construction projects -- which both environmentally reclaim unused land within Lansing and bring new residential opportunities for City residents -- within the last two years that have strengthened private investment in the Capital City. At right, Mayor Tony Benavides and Patrick Gillespie -- President of Gillespie Group, the development firm spearheading the Prudden Place project -- pause in front of an artist's rendering of the luxury apartment complex near Larch and Saginaw Streets.

In 2004 alone, more than $100 million in City building permits were granted for projects like the Lansing-Delta GM Assembly Plant, Lansing Community College campus construction, and Sparrow and Ingham Health System expansion projects.
